Equipment :

  • Mixer (stand or hand-held)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula or Offset Spatula
  • Piping Bag (optional)
  • Piping Tip (optional for decoration)

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar confectioners’ sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder preferably Dutch-processed
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk for a thinner frosting
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions :

  • Prepare Butter: Start by softening the butter at room temperature for about 30 minutes. This helps create a smooth texture when mixing the frosting.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder together to remove any lumps. Set this aside.
  • Cream Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy and smooth (about 2-3 minutes). Use a stand mixer or handheld mixer for best results.
  • Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder mixture into the butter. Mix on low speed to prevent a sugar cloud. Once incorporated, increase to medium speed and mix until smooth.
  • Add Vanilla and Cream: Pour in the vanilla extract and add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Mix until the frosting is light and fluffy. Add more cream if necessary to reach your desired consistency.
  • Adjust Texture and Taste: Taste the frosting and adjust by adding a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness. If the frosting is too thick, add more heavy cream to loosen it.
  • Decorate: Once you’ve achieved the right texture, use the frosting to decorate your cakes, cupcakes, brownies, or any dessert of choice. You can use a piping bag for intricate designs or an offset spatula for a smooth finish.
